Marketplace Roundup

In Milwaukee, Don Walker reported the Brewers and Kalahari Resorts, as part of an extensive partnership, will launch a "new feature at Miller Park that gives Bernie Brewer a new and wet landing after each Brewer home run." Following every Brewers home run, Bernie Brewer will "make a splash" in the new "Kalahari Splash Zone." Brewers Exec VP/Business Operations Rick Schlesinger: "We reserve the right to amp up the effect (next year)" (JSONLINE.com, 5/19).

Baird Hits 10 Golf Balls Off Omni San Diego
Hotel As Part Of Promotion For P.F. Chang's
TARGET PRACTICE: In San Diego, Nick Canepa reported in a front-page piece that golfer Briny Baird, as part of a promotion for P.F. Chang's, hit 10 golf balls Monday from the 34th floor roof of the Omni San Diego Hotel to a flag 268 yards away "stabbed into Petco Park's right field turf and surrounded by a large bull's-eye." If Baird hit the center of the bull's-eye with any of his shots, P.F. Chang's would issue free coupons for a free lettuce wrap appetizer with an entree order, and the San Diego Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society "would gather $2,000." The inner ring of the bull's-eye was worth $1,000 per ball, while the outer ring was worth $500 per ball. Baird hit the center circle twice and "scored on eight of his 10 shots, meaning he earned $17,500 for charity," and P.F. Chang's "upped it to $25,000." Padres GM Kevin Towers practiced with Baird and "put a couple of shots real close" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/19).

MILK MONEY: The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Nando Di Fino reports Yankees RF Nick Swisher "endorses just one specific product," Ohio-based Broughton Dairy's chocolate milk. Swisher is from Ohio, and Broughton "approached him in the offseason with an opportunity that was too good to pass up." Swisher: "I grew up on chocolate milk. I can drink chocolate milk all day" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 5/20).

PAINT THE TOWN RED: In Cincinnati, Shannon Russell noted the Reds are 20-18 and "off to their best start since 2006," but Cincinnati-based Koch Sporting Goods Owner Chris Koch "hasn't seen increased returns at the register." Koch said that Reds apparel sales are the "same as last year, and he attributes the steadiness to fickle Cincinnati fans." But the team's success "has had a positive effect" at Egelston-Maynard Sports in Covington, Kentucky, which has sold 25% more Reds hats and visors than a year ago (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 5/19).

CHEERING SECTION: The CFL Toronto Argonauts yesterday announced that they are "returning to the Toronto Sun as the team's official newspaper." The Sun also is a "presenting partner of the 2009 Argos cheerleaders" (TORONTO SUN, 5/20).
