Ronaldo's Deal With Nike
Makes Move Unlikely
In London, Joe Bernstein reported Manchester United MF Cristiano Ronaldo “will give the clearest indication yet that he will remain at Manchester United next season by signing a long-term deal” with Nike this week. The new deal, which is worth as much as US$38.7M over the next five years, "effectively rules out a move to Real Madrid, who are endorsed by Nike’s biggest rivals, adidas.” Ronaldo and golfer Tiger Woods are “seen as the faces of Nike around the world and the company would not countenance one of their main assets wearing an adidas Real Madrid shirt” (London DAILY MAIL, 5/19).

BUILT TOUGH: Ford Truck/SUV Communications Manager Eric Peterson said that the company still does “a lot of sports advertising, but just not every single bit of sports. NFL Football has been great.” Peterson: “We’ve done a lot with ESPN both on television and online. When they relaunched their web site this past January, we had an integration with them that featured Mike Rowe. It was not a page takeover per se, but Ford was clearly bringing you the new ESPN site with (footage of) a truck driving out and splashing mud on the anchor. We are trying to look for unique ways to stand out like that." Peterson noted the company's involvement with Versus' coverage of the PBR, saying it is "hugely relevant for our consumer." Peterson: "If you go to a monster jam event, that’s where many core truck customers are. … On Speed, we are involved with things like NASCAR, another huge passion point for us” (CABLEFAX DAILY, 5/19).

Tigers Have Introduced New Fan Contest
In Conjunction With Sponsor Belle Tire
IS IT IN YOU? In Oklahoma City, Darnell Mayberry reported Thunder F Kevin Durant was in L.A. last week "to film an online advertisement for Gatorade as part of the sports drink’s viral campaign with its athletes.” Durant “shot the spot in his Thunder uniform and is seen doing different things with a basketball while describing ‘G moments’ in his life, or obstacles and sacrifices he made to get to where he is today” (DAILY OKLAHOMAN, 5/16).

FOR THE FANS: The Tigers Friday introduced a new fan contest in conjunction with sponsor Belle Tire. The Belle Tire Blast Contest allows fans to win prizes based on whether a Tigers player hits a home run into the Belle Tire Blast Zone at Tiger Stadium. A fan’s name is drawn on game day, and if a player hits the area in right field, the fan receives a four-pack of tickets to a future Tigers game, a set of four Goodyear tires, an Amsoil Oil Change, Tigers merchandise and an HD radio. Fans can enter the drawing at belletire.com or at any Belle Tire location (THE DAILY).
