Baer Says Giants Will Retain Territorial Rights In San Jose

Baer Wishes A's Well, But Wants
Them To Come Up With New Plan
MLB Giants President & COO Larry Baer said the team's territorial rights in Santa Clara County are its "bedrock asset," and the Giants are "going to hold on to them" despite the A's efforts to relocate to San Jose. Baer: "We don't want to get into negotiations. We don't argue with the fact that the A’s need a new facility. We wish them well. We are not saying that we think this is going to become a one team market. We think that this is going to be a two team market, but they are going to have to come up with some plan in their territory." Baer said there are a "number of companies that are big Giant sponsors" in Santa Clara County. Baer: "We have a big broadcast audience with the radio and television from there. We have a lot of ticket holders, season ticket holders and people who drive up and go to games and groups. It is big. It’s the biggest. If you take those two areas, that’s the largest single source of Giants' fans. So it is really the heart of our fan base." Meanwhile, Baer said of the franchise's declining attendance in recent years, "Obviously, it makes planning a little bit harder going forward because we have a smaller season ticket base, but we are still in the top half of baseball and we are really in the bottom of the top third in terms of attendance. Our attendance has changed and the architecture of the crowd has changed. Smaller season ticket base, but we have a lot of people who are buying walk up. ... I think that we projected and put in our long-term plan that we were not going to be at 3.2 million forever." Baer noted the Giants last season drew 2.8 million fans to AT&T Park, and said, "I think that we have a chance to get close to that this year. We can operate and be fine in and around those levels" ("Chronicle Live," CSN Bay Area, 5/14).
