This Week's Newsmakers: Penguins Continue Solid Business Growth

THE DAILY each Friday offers our take on the performances over the past week of people and entities in sports business. Here are this week’s newsmakers:

Penguins Franchise Growing Stronger
And Stronger From Business Side
WIN: Penguins -- This franchise grows stronger and stronger from the business side. Local TV ratings for the team's epic seven-game series against the Capitals are through the roof, the team has a strong grip on the local market, it shores up its business operations with the hiring of David Peart and continues development toward its new arena. The Penguins have come a long way since declaring bankruptcy in '98.

LOSE: Mark Cuban -- While it would be easy to throw Roger Clemens into this mix based on his appearance on ESPN, this wasn't the best week for Cuban, who often is an owner for the people. But between shoving a cameraman and getting into arguments with players -- and their mothers -- and then offering his apology on his blog, he surely didn't act like a dignified owner, instead he came across as a self-centered and wealthy sore loser.

DRAW: Preakness Stakes -- It's getting a full field and some pre-race buzz now that Rachel Alexandra has entered, but has any Triple Crown race in recent memory had so much going against it? Between its shaky future and the bankruptcy filing of Magna Entertainment, along with the new guidelines attempting to clean up behavior in the infield that have led to calls for boycotts, organizers are facing some daunting tasks.
