Online betting company 188BET yesterday announced it "would become the first company to sponsor more than one [EPL] team at the same time," as it will be "featured on the shirts of Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic" beginning next season, according to Owen Gibson of the Manchester GUARDIAN. 188BET also is "expected to target deals with other" EPL clubs, as the company has a "large customer base in Asia and is set to launch an assault on the European market." 188BET CEO Andy Scott: "We have ambitious plans to develop our brand across Europe over the next two years and are excited about working with our new partners to drive this forward" (Manchester GUARDIAN, 5/13). REUTERS' Matt Scuffham reported 188BET will "become principal sponsor of the two clubs from the start of the 2009/10 season and its brand logo will appear on all adult club shirts." The company said that the deals will "enable it to raise its profile in the UK and Europe." The company "declined to comment on the level of investment involved in the deals, which will run concurrently over a two-year period." Scuffham noted Reebok, Bolton's current shirt sponsor, will "continue to manufacture Bolton's kit and is committed to sponsoring" Reebok Stadium until '16 despite its parent company, adidas AG, "closing its office at the stadium earlier this year, with 160 jobs lost as a result." 188BET replaces JJB Sports as Wigan's shirt sponsor (REUTERS, 5/12).
