Marketplace Roundup

Griffey Jr.'s Home Run Not
Included In Promotion
The AP reported Mariners DH Ken Griffey Jr.'s home run Sunday against the Twins at the Metrodome "went through a hole the size of a beach ball in a Subway promotional banner advertising a $25,000 prize for such a feat." However, the promo "only covers home runs hit through the sign by Twins players" (AP, 5/11).

SNEAKER SUIT: LAW.com's Charles Toutant reports former NBAer World B. Free is "suing Nike for marketing a commemorative basketball shoe in his name without his permission." Free "alleges Nike's planned June 12 rollout appears timed to take attention away from an eponymous line of shoes and clothing launched this month by a small German company, K1X, with the athlete's authorization" (LAW.com, 5/12).

SURVEY SAYS: The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Matthew Futterman noted market-research firm Turnkey Sports recently polled sports industry insiders "about the effectiveness of their work," and 84% said that fans "know which companies sponsor their favorite teams, sports or athletes." But when Turnkey "questioned the fans themselves, just 20% said they knew about the corporate partnerships" (WSJ.com, 5/11).
