Former Kentucky Speedway Owner Questions Pursuit Of Cup Race

Smith Calling For Former Kentucky Speedway
Owners To Drop Lawsuit Against NASCAR
Duchossois Industries Chair Richard Duchossois, a former owner of Kentucky Speedway who has filed suit against NASCAR and ISC, said that current owner SMI Chair & CEO Bruton Smith is "mischaracterizing the track's ability to get a Sprint Cup race," according to Dustin Dow of the CINCINNATI ENQUIRER. But Smith "maintained his stance Monday that the only way for him to bring Sprint Cup racing to Kentucky Speedway in 2010 is for the former track owners to drop their antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR -- and that they have a moral obligation to do so." Duchossois: "This is NASCAR's way of trying [to] force a settlement. Bruton Smith has the power to move that Cup date to Kentucky with or without the lawsuit still alive. By going to the press to say it's our fault is absolutely wrong." Duchossois added that all five original track owners are "in agreement about maintaining the appeal." Dow notes the former owners suffered a "loss on the sale" of the track to SMI last year, and Duchossois said that "recouping some of those losses ... is part of the motivation to keep the suit alive even though they no longer own the track." The former owners have "asked for $200[M] in damages in the suit." Duchossois: "We could get back some of the money we already spent building the track in the first place. The other motivation is that this suit could still open up the way races are awarded and break up the monopoly that NASCAR is running in auto racing" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 5/12).

LOOKING AHEAD: In Daytona Beach, Godwin Kelly noted ISC "revenue and profits are down because of the economic slump," and ISC Senior VP/Marketing & Business Operations Roger VanDerSnick said of ISC's efforts to combat the downturn, "We have looked at every piece of our business to reduce cost. That covers every single piece of our business, and obviously, there's a lot of cost in this relationship we have with NASCAR." VanDerSnick added that ISC is "in the planning stages of the 2010 season." VanDerSnick: "We've got a very cooperative effort going on now to be collaborative with NASCAR in this area. It's no secret they run the show on this because they have the sanctions. But there's a lot of things I think we can do together in this area" (Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL, 5/12).
