San Jose Says A's Ballpark Must Pass Referendum, Make City Money

San Jose City Council To Vote
On A's Ballpark Provisions |
The San Jose City Council today for the first time will "vote on a handful of principles meant to shape any future negotiations with the A's" on a new ballpark for the team in the city, according to a front-page piece by Denis Theriault of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. While those provisions "hold the promise for some form of city contribution, they also make clear such an investment would require a citywide referendum and couldn't include San Jose's strapped operating funds." At the top of San Jose's list is a "requirement that any ballpark actually make the city money ... instead of merely not costing it any." San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed said the ballpark should make the city "millions of dollars." Meanwhile, the council today also will "take up its most comprehensive plans yet for ensuring that business owners and other residents remain part of the city's evolving ballpark conversation," and Reed's previously announced "'Diridon Station Area Good Neighbor Committee,' citywide town hall meetings and frank chats with neighborhood leaders are part of the prescription." The Diridon committee would "include 27 members," and Reed said that its work "could start as soon as June ... with a review of the 2007 report clearing use of the Diridon area for a stadium." Theriault noted the San Jose Redevelopment Agency also "continues to negotiate for the remaining two parcels needed to complete the city's 14-acre site" where a ballpark would be built (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 5/11).
IN THE RED ZONE: The SILICON VALLEY/SAN JOSE BUSINESS JOURNAL's David Goll reports talks about building a new 49ers stadium in Santa Clara have "picked up speed, with participants saying privately that a deal could be finalized this month." Negotiators for Santa Clara and the team are "meeting 'several times a week' to hammer out the term sheet agreement that would govern construction of a 68,000-seat stadium on one of two parking lots at California's Great America amusement park." Goll notes any such agreement "must be approved by the City Council before going to Santa Clara voters, probably in March 2010." Negotiations have "also included discussion of Cedar Fair Entertainment Co. selling Great America" to the 49ers, and Santa Clara officials "have been integral to these talks, because the city owns the land underneath Great America and leases it to Cedar Fair." But 49ers VP/Communications Lisa Lang said that she is "not aware of any changes in Cedar Fair's interest in selling Great America to the team" (SILICON VALLEY/SAN JOSE BUSINESS JOURNAL, 5/8 issue).
