Basketball HOFer Chuck Daly, Sports Writer Bud Shrake Pass Away

Writer Says Daly Exuded Energy, Passion
Basketball HOFer CHUCK DALY passed away Saturday at the age of 78 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, according to Richard Goldstein of the N.Y. TIMES. Daly as an NBA coach was a "fast-talking figure who exuded energy and passion, but in dealing with ... rugged sorts he used persuasion in place of an iron hand" (N.Y. TIMES, 5/10). Daly coached the Pistons from '83-92, and in Detroit, Mitch Albom wrote Daly was "The Pistons Coach," and "none who has preceded or followed him -- even those who won big -- ever owned the job the way Chuck did" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 5/10). In New Jersey, Ian O'Connor noted Daly coached the original U.S. Olympic Dream Team to a Gold Medal at the '92 Barcelona Games, and he was the "mortal chosen to make a cohesive unit out of a dizzying collection of basketball gods" (Bergen RECORD, 5/10).

INFLUENTIAL WRITER PASSES: In Dallas, Jane Sumner reported former Dallas Morning News columnist BUD SHRAKE passed away Friday at the age of 77 from cancer (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 5/9). In N.Y., William Grimes noted Shrake collaborated with late golf instructor HARVEY PENICK to write "HARVEY PENICK'S LITTLE RED BOOK: LESSONS AND TEACHINGS FROM A LIFETIME OF GOLF," the "best-selling sports title of all time." Shrake also wrote for Sports Illustrated beginning in the mid-'60s, and contributed "wild, rambling accounts that helped the magazine redefine sports journalism" (N.Y. TIMES, 5/9).

ONE LAST GOODBYE: In Buffalo, Jerry Zremski reported attendees at Friday's memorial service for late U.S. Rep. and former AFLer JACK KEMP at the Washington National Cathedral included former U.S. Sen. BOB DOLE, former U.S. House Speaker NEWT GINGRICH and former Federal Reserve Chair ALAN GREENSPAN (BUFFALO NEWS, 5/9).
