Manny Suspended: Outlets Applauded For Not Avoiding Subject

ESPN Among Media Outlets Lauded
For Coverage Of Ramirez Story |
The Dodgers’ TV and radio partners Thursday “did not avoid” discussing Manny Ramirez’ 50-game suspension for violating MLB's drug policy, as both the FSN Prime Ticket and KABC-AM pregame shows “gave the Ramirez story its due,” according to Mike Penner of the L.A. TIMES. Dodgers TV announcer Vin Scully said prior to Thursday's Nationals-Dodgers game the team, the city of L.A., "all of California and for that matter all of baseball is still shocked and stunned" over the suspension. Dodgers radio announcer Charley Steiner added the news made Nationals-Dodgers “seemingly secondary.” Penner notes the news “prompted ESPN on Thursday to jump into developing-story mode, a condition that showcases what ESPN does best.” ESPN “devoted four segments of its midafternoon ‘SportsCenter’ to the Ramirez story” (L.A. TIMES, 5/8). ESPN's T.J. Quinn and Mark Fainaru-Wada were the first to identify the substance Ramirez used was HCG, and ESPN's Peter Gammons said, "The work (they) did yesterday was absolutely a masterpiece. They explained exactly what this drug was (and) how it is used in conjunction with steroids” ("Mike & Mike in the Morning," ESPN2, 5/8). Meanwhile, in L.A., Tom Hoffarth writes as if MLB Net “needed another sordid tale to prove its worth, this was going to be it, as it ramped up its ‘MLB Tonight’ show.” The net “stayed with the story practically all day, ducking in live looks at other games before it diverted to its Phillies-Mets scheduled game” (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 5/8). SI.com's Arash Markazi wrote, "Kudos to the MLB Network for having one great guest after another and putting the Ramirez story in perspective from the moment it broke" (TWITTER.com, 5/7). But KNBR-AM's Damon Bruce said, "You see the way that the media is reacting to this story. If this were Alex Rodriguez, if it had been Bonds, the fangs would be out. People are covering this like little lost Manny kind of screwed up on the way to work" ("Chronicle Live," CSN Bay Area," 5/7).
THE CIRCUS IS IN TOWN: MLB.com's Kevin Gurnick notes there were "roughly 100 members of the media waiting for a conference" with Colletti and Dodgers manager Joe Torre prior to Thursday's game against the Nationals (MLB.com, 5/7). In DC, Mark Zuckerman writes the scene at Dodger Stadium before the game “was something of a circus” (WASHINGTON TIMES, 5/8). Also in DC, Chico Harlan wrote the pregame scene "felt like a stage for the absurd" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 5/8). ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick said, "This is going to be a huge story and certainly it interrupts what was one of baseball’s great feel-good stories this year" ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 5/7).
