Manny Suspended: Fantasy Leagues Impacted By Announcement

Ramirez' Suspension Leads To
Strong Increases In Online Traffic
The 50-game suspension of Dodgers LF Manny Ramirez Thursday rocked the fantasy baseball world, as the move not only marks the first major star player to be subjected to MLB’s stiffened drug penalties but also the first to do so since fantasy baseball exploded in popularity over the last several years. Leading fantasy game and news sites reported strong increases in online traffic in the hours following the announcements, and in many leagues a large sell-off of Ramirez, even to a point where on major sites such as ESPN, Ramirez was no longer 100% owned across its leagues. On stock market-inspired fantasy games such as Rotohog and ProTrade, Ramirez’s price fell Thursday by roughly 25%, while his lineup replacement Juan Pierre rose about 20%. “This has definitely been a very big deal in our space,” said Rotohog CEO Kelly Perdew. “Anytime you have big real-world news like this, the activity and interaction goes up strongly and helps drive the business.”
