Moorad Upbeat Despite Low Attendance Figures At Petco Park

62,376 Fans Attend Padres' Four-Game
Homestand At Petco Park
For the first time since its opening in '04, Petco Park this past week "became a graveyard," as a total of 62,376 fans attended the Padres' four-game homestand, according to Nick Canepa of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. Attendance for the two games against the Rockies was 14,717 and 13,646, and 15,092 and 18,921 for the two games against the D'Backs. But you "can't blame the economy for this, even though Petco is overpriced." Canepa: "No, this is all about amusement diversion -- or lack of it. This is about a boring, unproductive product." The Padres have "become what we expected them to be, not very good." You "would think this isn't what" Padres Vice Chair & CEO Jeff Moorad "signed up for, but if he's terribly concerned, he wears it like an Armani suit." Moorad: "It's just part of the process, only more challenging than others. The early part of the season was encouraging, and I continue to be optimistic about the future." Canepa wrote, "Maybe some of Petco's novelty has worn off." But Moorad said, "It's going to take time. I sit with people virtually every game. I was with the CEO of Ask.com last night and he couldn't stop talking about the experience, whether it's the sightlines, the uniqueness of the ballpark, the Gaslamp or the baseball experience built around it. There is still an excitement about Petco" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/8).

SMALL DROP: In St. Paul, Charley Walters reports the Twins are averaging 24,243 tickets sold at the 45,423-seat Metrodome through 17 home games this season, down from 25,283 through 17 home games last season. But the team has sold 90% of 400 Champions Club seats, priced at $175-275 a game, for their inaugural season at Target Field next year (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 5/8).
