Manny Suspended: Ramirez Most Famous Player Caught By Testing

Suspension Will Cost Ramirez
$7.7M Of $25M '09 Salary
Dodgers LF Manny Ramirez Thursday “became the most famous player to be suspended under the drug policy" implemented by MLB in ’04, according to a front-page piece by Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. TIMES. Ramirez received a 50-game ban for testing positive in Spring Training for HCG, a “female fertility drug that is used by steroid users to restore testosterone production to normal levels.” The suspension will cost Ramirez $7.7M of his $25M '09 salary. A sports doping authority said that HCG “could legitimately be prescribed for a man who does not naturally produce enough testosterone.” However, BALCO Founder Victor Conte said that the drug is “often used to replenish testosterone at the end of a cycle of steroid treatments.” An appeal hearing was scheduled for next Wednesday, but sources said that Ramirez “dropped the appeal on the advice of his agent, Scott Boras” (L.A. TIMES, 5/8). An MLB official said that Ramirez “was notified in April that he violated the league’s policy, and he initially appealed the ruling” (USA TODAY, 5/8). Sources said that after the initial test, MLB “followed up with a more comprehensive test that confirmed the testosterone had to come from an artificial source” (ESPN.com, 5/7).  “Beyond Steroids” author Anthony Roberts said that steroid users “often take HCG both during and after a steroid cycle.” In S.F., Lance Williams notes it is “injected under the skin, much in the way” HGH is administered. Roberts said that the drug is “available over the counter in Mexico and the Dominican Republic” and can be “purchased in the United State from online pharmacies” (S.F. CHRONICLE, 5/8).

ANOTHER TEST FOR MLB: In DC, Dave Sheinin writes following Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez acknowledging prior performance-enhancing drug use, MLB "has now seen its two highest-paid active stars nabbed this year in a span of only four months.” And it comes at a time when MLB “had hoped the worst of its drug scandal was behind it." WADA member Gary Wadler noted that if Ramirez “had a legitimate medical reason to take the drug, he could have applied for a therapeutic use exemption, over 100 of which were handed out in both 2007 and 2008” (WASHINGTON POST, 5/8). In a front-page cover story, USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale writes Ramirez’ suspension is the “latest blemish to raise questions about the game,” but it also is a “sign that new testing procedures aimed at cleaning up the sport could be helping” (USA TODAY, 5/8). Several anti-doping experts said that the finding “may signal a new, more sophisticated chapter of baseball’s steroid era” (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/8).
