Philadelphia MLS Team Named Union, Will Wear Blue, Gold Colors

The Philadelphia MLS team that begins play next season will be named Union and "will take the field wearing blue and gold," according to sources cited by Jeff Gammage of the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER. The "long-awaited official announcement of the team name and colors is scheduled for Monday at City Hall." Union was chosen "after an exhaustive internal evaluation aimed at selecting a moniker that would be both modern and lasting." In choosing Union, the team "hearkens to the city's part in the nation's founding and to the area's historic role in the American labor movement." The team Monday "also plans to reveal its new logo: a circular emblem that bears a hissing snake." The logo was "briefly, accidentally posted on" MLS' Web site. MLS Philadelphia President Tom Veit Thursday indicated that he "could not discuss the name or logo before the official announcement," but said, "We're not looking to change our logo every four years. We're looking for a logo that's going to stand the test of time."  The team "also plans to announce ticket prices Monday, already having taken deposits for about 6,000 season tickets" at the club's $500M, 18,500-seat stadium in Chester, Pennsylvania. To select the team's name, a "giant list was reduced to 135 choices, then to four announced finalists." Fans voted at Philly.com with the team "pledging to abide by the results so long as the balloting was decisive." The other finalists were Philadelphia SC, Philadelphia AC and Philadelphia City. AC, which stands for "athletic club" or SC, which stands for "soccer club," "could still be added to the name Union" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 5/8).
