Warriors Facing Leadership Quandary As NBA Draft Draws Near

Mullin Has Presided Over
Draft For Warriors In Past
Publicly there is "nobody is in charge of the Warriors' draft," and Warriors coach Don Nelson said that he has "no idea who's calling the draft shots for his team," according to the S.F. CHRONICLE's Scott Ostler, who writes under header, "We Still Don't Know Who's Running The Warriors." Though sources said that Warriors Exec VP/Basketball Operations Chris Mullin "stopped performing his job duties when he became marginalized last season, there are reliable reports that Mullin is on the scouting trail, prepping for" the June 25 NBA Draft. Everyone "seems to agree that Mullin will be ushered out the door at the end of June when his contract expires." Mullin has "presided over the draft in recent years, but that won't happen this time." Ostler writes it appears that Assistant GM Larry Riley "will be the man, but if so, what's all the secrecy about?" Ostler: "This strange void of leadership would be less worrisome if the Warriors weren't a team in need of leadership and an overhaul. ... The team's future direction might be less hazy if the Warriors had an actual voice" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 5/7). In California, Marcus Thompson III cited a team official as saying that Warriors President Robert Rowell is "not pulling strings in basketball operations, save for a few forays into that side of the business." Nelson and the team "contend he is just a coach -- his GM-esque overtures this season notwithstanding." Thompson: "That leaves Riley flying solo atop the basketball operations department." Mullin is "lacking influence," as team sources "sympathetic to Mullin say he's been stripped of power, while team sources who support Rowell say Mullin has stopped doing his job." Thus, Riley is "left to captain the basketball side of things" (CONTRA COSTA TIMES, 5/6).

LEADING THE PACE: In St. Paul, Don Seeholzer reports former Pacers GM David Kahn has "emerged as the apparent favorite" in the T'Wolves' "search for a new head of basketball operations." Kahn is "believed to be open to" T'Wolves coach Kevin McHale returning, if that's what McHale "wants to do." Seeholzer notes there also "could be a place in a Kahn-led front office for" Assistant GM Fred Hoiberg, who has "spent the past three years being groomed to succeed McHale" as VP/Basketball Operations, McHale's former role (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 5/7).
