Dodgers, Braves, Padres Among MLB Teams Struggling At Gate

Dodgers Attendance Through 13 Home Games
Is Down 9% From Same Period Last Year
The Dodgers this week drew crowds of 30,530 Monday and 33,557 Tuesday against the D-Backs and 31,348 Wednesday against the Nationals at the 56,000-seat Dodger Stadium despite winning their 11th through 13th consecutive home games, and the "core truth here is that there isn't much walk-up traffic in L.A. yet," according to Ray Ratto of the S.F. CHRONICLE. Dodgers attendance through 13 home games is down 9% from the same period last year, though, "given the small sample size, that should pick up with a better economy, the end of the school year and warmer weather." But the Dodgers have the best record in MLB at 21-8, and "drawing 30K, 33K and then 31K with all the momentum a team could possibly want tells us that for the time being, results alone aren't enough to electrify folks to pry open their wallets" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 5/7).

TOMAHAWK CHOP: In Atlanta, Cash & O'Brien report the Braves have seen their ticket sales "slide this season, causing the fourth-largest drop" in MLB. The Braves through 14 home games at 50,096-seat Turner Field have averaged 24,192 tickets sold, down from an average of 31,270 for the '08 season, when they ranked 10th in the NL. The weather is "one factor," as the Braves "averaged just 20,358 tickets sold during the rain-plagued, eight-game homestand that ended Tuesday." Braves Chair & CEO Terry McGuirk: "This town always does so much better after school's out. ... But the weather's had a tremendous effect" (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 5/7).

WALK IN THE PARK: In San Diego, Bill Center reports the Padres drew crowds of 14,717 Monday and 13,646 Tuesday for games against the Rockies and 15,092 yesterday for a game against the D'Backs at 42,445-seat Petco Park, marking the three smallest crowds in the six-year-old ballpark's history. Eight of the 10 smallest crowds in Petco Park history "have come during this season's first six weeks." The previous smallest crowd at the park was 18,714 fans for an April '08 game against the Astros (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/7).
