New Rose Quarter Plan Does Not Include Triple-A Ballpark

Trail Blazers Looking To Redevelop
Area Around Memorial Coliseum
Portland Mayor Sam Adams yesterday said that the Rose Quarter is "officially off the table as a possible site" for a new stadium for the Triple-A PCL Portland Beavers, according to Mark Larabee of the Portland OREGONIAN. Adams said that the city and the Trail Blazers are "negotiating an agreement for redeveloping the area that would take advantage" of Memorial Coliseum, "perhaps updating or redesigning it." The city "should complete the initial agreement with the Blazers within two weeks." Adams said that he "hopes to set up a deliberative public conversation that gives people plenty of time to comment, with the goal of putting a revised plan for the Rose Quarter in front of the City Council by the first of the year." Adams said that "would also include details on how to pay for the projects." The Blazers have said that their "plans for an entertainment district that includes bars, restaurants and nightclubs could run as much as $100[M]." As far as finding a new home for the Beavers, Adams said that negotiations are "solely focused on the city's Lents Park." Larabee notes the city "dropped Lents in March in favor of the coliseum, but that triggered an almost immediate public outcry." During the past week, Beavers Owner Merritt Paulson and city officials "have been working on a new deal to build the 9,000-seat stadium where Walker Stadium sits in Lents Park." Paulson said that there is a "lot of positive momentum for Lents at the negotiating table." Larabee notes the baseball stadium project is "part of a larger deal" to bring MLS to Portland, as the city has "agreed to help renovate" the Beavers' PGE Park for the city's new MLS team, which also will be owned by Paulson. The two projects are "estimated to cost $88.8[M], though the terms of the deal are more vague as the focus turns back to Lents" (Portland OREGONIAN, 5/7).
