GolTV Renews U.S. And Canada TV Rights To Germany's Bundesliga

GolTV's Three-Year Rights Renewal With
Bundesliga Begins With '09-10 Season |
GolTV has renewed TV rights in the U.S. and Canada for the German Bundesliga through '12. The network has held the rights since '06 (GolTV). MULTICHANNEL NEWS' Mike Reynolds noted the three-year extension begins with the '09-10 season, and also includes South America TV rights and "match rights on the Internet." The deal follows GolTV's extension last month with Spain's La Liga, as the network's deals with both leagues were set to expire at the end of the current seasons. Meanwhile, Reynolds noted GolTV "continues to build its subscription base back up" after Dish Network dropped the network when its contract expired on August 1 last year. The license fee dispute "served to reduce Gol TV's sub count overall to about 12 million from 14 million," and the net is "now engaged in litigation over funds it says it's owed" by Dish. Still, GolTV COO Rodrigo Lombello said that the net is "on target to reach the 14 million plateau again by year-end." Lombello added that the net is "making strides toward presenting some of its soccer coverage in HD next year" (MULTICHANNEL.com, 5/5).
FLEET FEET: DirecTV's Spanish- and English-language programming service DirecTV Mas has launched Foot School TV, an interactive channel dedicated to young Spanish-speaking soccer fans and their parents in the U.S. (DirecTV).
