Penguins Have Season-Ticket Waiting
List Of 2,000 Accounts, 5,000 Seats |
In Pittsburgh, Robert Dvorchak reports the Penguins have a 96% renewal rate of season-ticket holders for next season, their last in Mellon Arena. Hockey has "always had an avid following" in Pittsburgh, and the team also has a season-ticket "waiting list of 2,000 accounts representing about 5,000 seats." Penguins VP/Communications Tom McMillan: "We're very fortunate to be in this situation. It wasn't all that long ago that we had our struggles here" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 5/6).
FROM RUSSIA, WITH LOVE: KHL President Alexander Medvedev said that he is "interested in buying an NHL franchise." Medvedev: "We have considered 10 opportunities, we have short-listed three and we continue to look at these three teams. We will just make our due diligence." Medvedev added, "It's a very strange situation when real hockey (cities) like Quebec don't have an NHL team." But NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said that he "wasn't aware of any serious efforts by Medvedev to buy a team." Daly and Medvedev are expected to meet this week at the IIHF World Hockey Championship in Switzerland (CP, 5/5).
CALL OF THE WILD: In St. Paul, Charley Walters reports Penguins assistant GM Chuck Fletcher reportedly is the "strong front-runner for the Wild GM job." Fletcher is considered an "exceptional judge of talent" (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 5/6). Meanwhile, a source said that Ducks Senior VP/Hockey Operations David McNab recently interviewed for the vacant position (L.A. TIMES, 5/6).
WINNING ISN'T EVERYTHING: The Panthers said that they sold 1,377 tickets under the club's "Playoff Promise" campaign. The promo "promised fans the team would make the playoffs -- for the first time since 2000 -- or buyers would get tickets to four games free next season" (SUN-SENTINEL.com, 5/5).
