USOC Chief Communications Officer Darryl Seibel Resigns

Seibel Says Decision To
Leave USOC His Choice
USOC Chief Communications Officer Darryl Seibel will resign from his position, effective June 5, after more than six years. Seibel will assist the organization as a consultant on various assignments, including the transition to his successor, for which the USOC will conduct a national search (USOC). Seibel said, "This was entirely my decision. It's something I've been thinking about since Beijing. It's the right time." In Colorado Springs, Brian Gomez notes Seibel is the "sixth high-ranking executive to leave" the USOC since August. Seibel was the USOC's fourth-highest paid employee in '07, earning a total compensation of $335,244 (Colorado Springs GAZETTE, 5/6). AROUND THE RINGS' Karen Rosen reported Seibel was "not believed to have been forced out" from the USOC like former CEO Jim Scherr, CMO Rick Burton and Chief of Sports Performance Steve Roush. Seibel said USOC acting CEO Stephanie Streeter "has been extremely supportive. She has given me the time and support to think about this, and I greatly appreciate everything she has done" (AROUNDTHERINGS.com, 5/5).

TOUGH LOSS FOR USOC: UNIVERSAL SPORTS' Alan Abrahamson noted Seibel's job is "notoriously demanding," as the hours "are brutal." Also, while the "travel might initially seem romantic and glamorous; it can be a real grind." Seibel "always put the USOC's interests first," and he "could be trusted to provide the one thing a reporter always wants, a straight answer" (UNIVERSALSPORTS.com, 5/5).
