Hornets Owner Shinn Pledges Support Of
UNO's Athletic Department |
The Univ. of New Orleans (UNO) "has to trim" $15.3M from its budget, including $1.4M set aside for athletics, and the Hornets, the New Orleans City Council and local businessman John Georges yesterday "pledged support of UNO's cash-strapped athletic program," according to Pierce Huff of the New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE. UNO faces a $1.4M shortfall next year "as a result of state budget cuts in higher education" for the '09-10 FY. Hornets Owner George Shinn said in a statement, "I reached out to UNO to discuss ways that we can help the Athletic Department and told them I would head a committee in an effort to save athletics at the school. ... We want to fight for things that can help New Orleans, and protecting an institution that strives for excellence only benefits our community." Hornets Senior Dir of Communications Harold Kaufman said that "more details regarding the amount and method of the team's contribution would be forthcoming" (New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE, 5/5).
