NLL Portland LumberJax Plan To Relocate For Next Season
The owners of the NLL Portland LumberJax do not intend to operate the franchise in Portland next season. The franchise has been in operation for the past four seasons, and made the NLL championship game in '08. LumberJax Managing Partner Angela Batinovich: "We are entertaining many different avenues for the future of this franchise" (LumberJax). LumberJax Exec VP Brian Silcott yesterday said that the economic climate has "dramatically affected the team's ability to attract investors and sponsors in Portland, forcing the team to look for other backers in other cities, with Seattle being a potential destination." Silcott said that attendance, "which reached an average of 7,200 this season, was satisfactory and the team believed a fan base was being developed." However, Silcott said that sponsorship dollars "declined this season about $300,000." While an outright sale of the team is "an option," Silcott said that folding the team is "not an option at this point." Portland Arena Management Senior VP/Business Affairs Jay Isaac said that efforts "had been made to assist the Jax, including offering increased spots in Trail Blazers media for free and use of additional suites for Jax promotions" at the Rose Garden. Silcott added that an offer was "made to involve Blazers owner Paul Allen as a part-owner of the Jax, which was declined" (Aaron Fentress, Portland OREGONIAN, 5/5).
