TNT Draws Record 5.352 Million Viewers For Celtics-Bulls Game Six

Celts-Bulls Game Six Draws
Record Cable TV Audience
TNT drew 5.352 million viewers for the Bulls' three-overtime win over the Celtics in Game Six of their first-round NBA Playoffs series Thursday, making it the most-watched NBA opening-round playoff game ever on cable TV (Turner). DAILY VARIETY's Rick Kissell notes the game "easily [stands] as cable's top program of the night in most key categories." The previous high for NBA cable viewership this season was 3.82 million viewers for TNT's coverage of Lakers-Jazz Game Three on April 23 (DAILY VARIETY, 5/4). Meanwhile, in Dallas, Barry Horn noted while the Mavericks "continue to sell out American Airlines Center, fan interest in watching them on television has fallen" since the team's first-round loss to the Warriors in '07. KTXA-Ind averaged 263,940 HHs for five broadcasts during the first-round Mavericks-Spurs series, down 37% from 418,880 average HHs for Warriors-Mavericks in '07. That comes on the heels of the net averaging 72,201 HHs for 30 Mavericks regular-season games this season, down from 135,660 HHs in '07 (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 5/3).

FUZZY MATH: The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Sam Schechner reported Nielsen Co. last week told TV networks that an "in-house study showed 8% more people were watching TV in Nielsen households than had been measured" on the company's people meters. Nielsen said that the effect is "more pronounced when more people watch together." TV execs said that some nets "could use the new data to tout programs to advertisers, particularly those that are often watched in groups, such as sports events or award shows." But a TV ad sales exec said that because the disclosure "affects all networks, and it is widely known that not everyone pushes the Nielsen buttons, it isn't likely to have a significant effect on the overall TV-ad marketplace" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 5/2).
