MLB Facility Notes: Oakland City Attorney Lashes Out At A's

Writer Feels Wolff, MLB Have Been Looking
To Move From Oakland For At Least 10 Years
In S.F., Zennie Abraham noted Oakland City Attorney John Russo in the city's Legal Briefs newsletter has written "what is without a doubt the strongest attack on the Oakland Athletics attempts to leave Oakland by [an] Oakland City Official." Russo wrote if A's Owner Lew Wolff "thinks anybody is buying his sob story about why the A's have to leave Oakland, he's seriously underestimating the intelligence of the team's fan base, the press and the people of this city." Russo: "Here is the truth: A's owners and [MLB] have been plotting to abandon Oakland for at least 10 years. They have never been partners in the city's efforts to build a new stadium and keep the franchise in Oakland. Collusion between A's owners and the league has been evident since 1999, after a settlement gave Oakland and Alameda County the right to force a sale of the team to different owners. A team of buyers committed to keeping the club in Oakland stepped up and a price was set. But, for the first time in anyone's memory, [MLB] denied the transfer of a franchise to a qualified ownership group" (SFGATE.com, 4/28).

BALLPARK GUIDE: In a special to YAHOO SPORTS, Tigers CF Curtis Granderson wrote, "If you haven't been to a Royals game at Kauffman Stadium before (or even if you have), I highly recommend that you check it out this season. It's a great baseball environment." The ballpark's upgrades "give it a minor-league feel, but on a much larger scale considering the size of the stadium." The new fountain seats in right-centerfield and left-centerfield are a "nice addition, and probably the one I really liked most." Granderson: "It is a great place to watch a game no matter who the opponent is." Granderson noted his "favorite ballpark" is Angel Stadium (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 4/29).

SITE CHECK: In Ft. Myers, Glenn Miller reports Lee County (FL) commissioners yesterday voted to build the Red Sox’ new Spring Training Complex at the Watermen-Pinnacle site on Daniels Parkway, just east of I-75. The complex, set to open in '12, will be constructed on the "least controversial site -- the site with the fewest permitting and environmental issues" (Ft. Myers NEWS-PRESS, 4/30).

WELCOME TO MANNYWOOD: Beginning with tonight’s game against the Padres, fans at Dodger Stadium will be able to sit in a seating area called “Mannywood,” in honor of Dodgers LF Manny Ramirez, at the field-level near the left-field foul pole. Seats in the section will be sold in pairs, with exclusive “Mannywood” T-shirts, for $99. Also, the Dodgers have lowered the price for tickets in the All-You-Can-Eat Right Field Pavilion -- for 70 of the team’s 81 home games, the price will be $25 per ticket, down from $35 last season (Dodgers).
