Marketplace Roundup

A-B President Dave Peacock yesterday responded to the Wall Street Journal report that the brewer is planning to spend about 50% less on its upcoming Olympics ad package with NBC and said, "We are in negotiations, with no final decision made at this time." In St. Louis, Jeremiah McWilliams wrote A-B has had a "long and colorful history of paying extra to lock its rivals -- especially Miller and Coors -- out of key sponsorships." While that "started receding somewhat even before" InBev's takeover of A-B last year, allowing MillerCoors to "swoop into the Olympics and fill a vacuum left by a smaller A-B marketing budget would represent a drastic change in philosophy" (STLTODAY.com, 4/29).

By Jeff Burton For Two Races This Season
RELIEVING THE PAIN: Prilosec OTC has reached a deal with Richard Childress Racing (RCR) to serve as the primary sponsor for an RCR entry during three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races this season. Prilosec will sponsor RCR's No. 31 Chevrolet driven by Jeff Burton for this weekend's Crown Royal presents the Russ Friedman 400 in Richmond and the July 26 Allstate 400 at the Brickyard in Indianapolis, as well as RCR's No. 33 entry driven by Clint Bowyer for the Pepsi 500 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, on October 11 (SCENEDAILY.com, 4/29).

THE GOOSE IS LOOSE: Baseball HOFer Goose Gossage appeared on Fox Business' "America's Nightly Scoreboard" earlier this week wearing a Guinness shirt to promote his association with the brewery. Gossage was asked about the increase in endorsement opportunities since he was inducted in the HOF last year, and said, "I was told if I was ever to get into the (HOF) it would change your life and it certainly has. I've been a lot busier than I ever was before. I thought I was about as busy as I wanted to be before" ("America's Nightly Scoreboard," Fox Business, 4/27).

ROUNDUP: Cowboys LB DeMarcus Ware yesterday took part in a photo shoot for Venom Energy sports drink, which he endorses. During the shoot, Ware discussed being a finalist to appear on the cover of EA Sports' "Madden NFL 10" videogame. Ware: "Usually the top guy gets the cover of Madden. It's a big deal to be a candidate" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 4/30)....GM's Pontiac brand will cease to exist next year, but will "remain the sponsor of the Canadian women's alpine ski team and the country's biggest national ski racing series" (AROUNDTHERINGS.com, 4/29).
