Daytona Int'l Speedway Begins Renovating Area Outside Track

Kennel Club Coming Down As Part
Of Renovations Around DIS
The Daytona Beach Kennel Club "will be completely demolished in the next few weeks" as Daytona Int'l Speedway (DIS) "begins the transformation of the blighted property into a park-like addition to the track," according to Godwin Kelly of the Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL. Eleven months ago, ISC, which owns DIS, "did a land swap with Delaware North, which owned the kennel club." ISC purchased the land and "built the new dog track facility on Williamson Blvd., then exchanged that for the parcel next to the Speedway." Delaware North paid ISC $8M for the swap. DIS President Robin Braig said, "We're going to demolish this building, add some tram stops here and move the grandstand gates out." DIS for the July 4 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coke Zero 400 "plans to use the property as a parking area for the main grandstands." By February '10, the land "will be turned into a new grandstand entrance with plenty of grass and trees." Braig: "Eventually, we will move all our merchandise trailers, our hospitality tent, our food and beverage, all along this front-stretch" (Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL, 4/30).

BRUTON STRENGTH: SMI officials yesterday said that the track operator is "continuing to progress through an opening wave" of approximately $13.5M in renovations at Kentucky Speedway to "expand parking, establish infield camping, augment track access roads and create new entrance areas along with a new restroom/bathhouse facility." Future renovation plans for the track include the "expansion of the concourse-level grandstands in Turns 1 and 4 and the addition of folding seats and drink trays." Plans also call for the construction of "new restrooms and concession buildings, the expansion of camping options and the renovation of the existing infield layout" (SCENEDAILY.com, 4/29).
