Red Wings Auctioning Off Suite For Game 2 Of Semifinal Series

Red Wings Auctioning Off Suite
For Playoff Game Against Ducks
The Red Wings, searching for options to fill unsold suite inventory in a city where unemployment this year has reached as high as 22%, are auctioning a game rental unit for Game 2 of the NHL Western Conference semifinals at Joe Louis Arena. In a first for the team, participants can bid on a premium seat package that includes 20 tickets, a $500 food-and-beverage credit, playoff merchandise valued at $200 and an autographed, framed print of Red Wings D Nick Lidstrom. In addition, former Red Wings great and 50-goal scorer John Ogrodnick will sign autographs in the suite for two periods. The Red Wings are promoting the suite auction on their Web site, and as of 10:00am ET, the highest bid was $780, which was $30 higher than the required minimum bid of $750. Bids are taken in $10 increments. The Red Wings normally sell game rental suites for $4,000, said Matt Brown, the team’s VP/Corporate Partnership Sales. The auction closes at 9:00pm ET Wednesday for Game 2. As of this morning, the NHL had not announced dates for the Red Wings’ series against the Ducks.

QUICK TURNAROUND: The club’s decision to auction a suite was also due to the quick turnaround for playoff games, Brown said. The situation in the postseason makes it difficult for companies to rent a suite on short notice, he said. “We have two things going against us and decided to try something a little different,” Brown said. “We have a few open suites and are going through what most of our league brethren are experiencing. It’s a challenging environment in general.” City-owned Joe Louis Arena, a 28-year-old building managed by Olympia Entertainment, the Red Wings’ facility operations firm, has 65 total suites, and 10 skyboxes are reserved for game rentals, Brown said. Other NHL teams have held suite auctions in various forms. The Flyers have sold suites for $5,000 and up to companies that auction those units, and also donated skyboxes to charities that in turn sell them to the highest bidder, according to Flyers officials.
