Sanchez Brings A Buzz To Jets, Which Could Help Sell PSLs, Tickets

Sanchez' Replica No. 6 Jets Jersey Was Top
Seller Last Weekend On NFLShop.com
Since the Jets drafted QB Mark Sanchez with the No. 5 pick in Saturday's NFL Draft, the buzz surrounding the organization "has been deafening," according to Neil Best of NEWSDAY. One way to measure the response to the selection is the fact Sanchez' replica No. 6 jersey was the "best selling of the weekend on NFLShop.com." However, a "more important measure will take shape as the Jets try to sell PSLs and tickets" to their new Meadowlands stadium, set to open in '10. The team later this week "will move to the second phase of that process, opening all seats not in pricy club sections to existing season subscribers, in order of seniority." Jets Senior VP/Business Operations Matthew Higgins agreed that a move such as drafting Sanchez "is good for business," but he "adamantly denied a direct connection between Sanchez and PSLs." Meanwhile, Best notes Sanchez is a "natural for marketing work, with added appeal as a potential Latino star in a league with few players of that heritage." But Higgins said that the team "will be careful in how and whether to use Sanchez's ethnicity for marketing" (NEWSDAY, 4/28).

APPLE OF THEIR EYE: The N.Y. Post's Mark Cannizzaro said Sanchez' marketability is a “big reason why they drafted him, other than the fact that he can throw a football pretty well.” Cannizzaro pointed out the Jets have basically made Sanchez the "face of their franchise ... so there’s a lot on his plate, including being a huge marketing symbol for them.” ESPN Deportes broadcaster and former NFLer Raul Allegre said Sanchez "could have a great impact because with him you get two for the price of one. He’s already a star in L.A. which is the biggest Hispanic market. He’ll have a chance to compete for the number one job with the Jets, which is the second-largest Hispanic market." Cannizzaro: “Everybody already knows New York is the place to be if you want to market yourself during and after your pro career (is over). I think he has an even huger opportunity because of the fact that he can reach out to the Hispanic fans and there are so many out there.” Allegre noted the Jets have a "very large following in Mexico and if you bring a team like the Jets to Mexico with a player like Mark Sanchez for a regular-season game, they just couldn’t have enough tickets for all the fans that would come to the game" ("Outside The Lines," ESPN, 4/27). In N.Y., William Rhoden wrote Sanchez' "function is cosmic as well as practical." The Jets' "search continues for an iconic quarterback with that priceless combination of pizazz, talent, charisma and a flair for the dramatic." Sanchez "bursts with personality and charm," and his presence "has emerged as the most consistent attribute" (N.Y. TIMES, 4/27).
