NASCAR Not Happy With LMS Promo Tied To Talladega Crash

NASCAR Feels LMS Promo Tied
To Talladega Crash Is In Poor Taste
NASCAR VP/Communications Jim Hunter yesterday "expressed some clear displeasure" about a Lowe's Motor Speedway (LMS) promotion "tying ticket prices to how many cars were involved in the biggest accident" at Sunday's Sprint Cup Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway, according to a front-page piece by Peter St. Onge of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER. The LMS promo was announced last week, a "couple of days before seven fans were injured" during driver Carl Edwards' wreck on the final lap Sunday. Hunter: "To be honest, we'd rather not dignify that type of promotion with a comment." LMS had "offered to sell 1,000 tickets combined to May 16th's NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race and May 24th's Coca-Cola 600, pricing them at a dollar per car" involved in the largest wreck at Talladega, which came on the seventh lap and involved 14 cars. LMS at noon yesterday "began offering the 1,000 tickets for $14." LMS VP/Communications Scott Cooper: "All of the media coverage leading into Talladega was centered around 'The Big One,' and we thought it would be a fun tie-in for fans. ... We had a lot of fans that called early Sunday afternoon because they were excited about it. We decided they deserved the chance to get the savings we had promised." Cooper said that the $14 tickets "sold out within an hour," while "more at that price were offered to fans who were waiting in line" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 4/28).

REAR VIEW MIRROR: In Birmingham, Doug Demmons wrote on his blog under the header, "Bad Timing For A Good Race Track Marketing Gimmick." Demmons: "Lowe's probably could have come up with another gimmick to put a limited number of tickets on sale for dirt-cheap prices. They could sell tickets for $9 in honor of Brad Keselowski's No. 09 winning the race" (AL.com, 4/27). CBSSPORTS.com's Pete Pistone wrote the promo is in "very poor taste and another example of how things have slipped at LMS since Humpy Wheeler's departure" (CBSSPORTS.com, 4/26).
