HSBC Champions Tournament In China Elevated To WGC Event

HSBC Champions Tournament's Prize Money
Will Increase From $4.9M To $7M
The HSBC Champions tournament in China has been elevated to a World Golf Championships (WGC) event. The tournament will be held at Shanghai's Sheshan Int'l Golf Club from November 5-8, and golfers Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia have confirmed they will participate in the event (IMG).  The tournament's prize money will go up from US$4.9M to US$7M. PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said the staging of a WGC event in Asia is "one of the most significant steps ever taken in the globalisation of golf." The event "will remain in Shanghai next year to coincide with the city hosting the World Expo, but future venues have yet to be determined" (GUARDIAN.co.uk, 4/28). BLOOMBERG NEWS' Grant Clark notes the tournament "becomes the fourth leg -- and the only one outside the U.S. -- of the WGC series." The HSBC event previously was "sanctioned by the leading tours other than the U.S. PGA Tour." China Golf Association Secretary General Zhang Xiaoning said the tournament "will be the main force driving the development of the sport of golf in China" (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 4/28).
