Las Vegas Will Host NASCAR Champion's Week, Awards Ceremony

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards Have
Been Held In N.Y. Since '81
NASCAR Thursday officially announced that it will move its Sprint Cup Series Champion's Week festivities to Las Vegas. The event had been held in N.Y. since '81. The Sprint Cup Series Awards Ceremony will be held at the Wynn Las Vegas on Friday, December 4. Other activities being planned for Champion's Week include the return of the Victory Lap, a procession of the top 10 drivers in their race cars; the NASCAR media luncheon; the Pit Stop Tour; and the NASCAR Street Tour, which will include cars and mobile marketing units throughout the city (NASCAR). Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority President Rossi Ralenkotter said that the authority "would pay NASCAR between $500,000 and $1[M] annually to host the weeklong event" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL, 4/24).

WHAT ABOUT THE FANS? NASCAR Managing Dir of Corporate Communications Ramsey Poston said the decision on whether to sell tickets to the awards ceremony to fans "hasn't been made yet." Poston: "That will be decided in the near future" (SCENEDAILY.com, 4/23). In Charlotte, David Poole writes the awards ceremony "could be great" in Las Vegas. But a "change of venue is not what that event needs most." The ceremony "will be a success in Las Vegas only if there are events surrounding it in which fans can take part." NASCAR should make the awards ceremony a "weeklong party so fans get several chances to meet the sport's biggest stars" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 4/24)

DRIVING DOWN THE COAST: The NASCAR Nationwide Series and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season-ending awards ceremonies will be combined and held at the Loews Miami Beach hotel on Monday, November 23 (NASCAR). NASCAR SCENE's Bob Pockrass noted the "combining of the Nationwide and Truck banquets is designed to save money." Poston said that NASCAR is "talking with ABC/ESPN and Speed to determine who will televise that banquet." ESPN has the Nationwide contract, and Speed has the Truck contract (SCENEDAILY.com, 4/23).
