Bucs Release Season Tickets, Waive Deposits On Some Seats

Bucs Offering Partial Season Ticket Packages,
Waiving Seat Deposits For First Time Since '98
The Buccaneers are "making season tickets available to anyone who wants them without delay," according to Rick Stroud of the ST. PETERSBURG TIMES. For "much of the past decade, the Bucs boasted that they had more than 100,000 fans on a waiting list for season tickets." But the economic "strife, coupled with a Bucs team that has not won a playoff game since 2003, has eroded the legion of fans willing to put their names on a list for the chance to plunk down thousands of dollars for a seat deposit and season tickets." The Bucs are "offering partial season ticket packages and waiving seat deposits on some tickets for the first time since" the 65,857-seat Raymond James Stadium opened in '98. Bucs Dir of PR Jeff Kamis said, "We've said we were going to try and be creative with the economy and make as many tickets available to as many people as we can." Stroud noted the Bucs have "not revealed how many seats are available." Bucs co-Chair Joel Glazer "stopped short of predicting the Bucs may not [be] able to sell out all their games, possibly forcing television blackouts" (TAMPABAY.com, 4/23).

CAUSE FOR CONCERN? In N.Y., Bob Raissman notes in N.Y. the NFL blackout rule has been a "nonfactor," as the Giants and Jets "regularly produce sellouts." But now, as both teams "look forward to moving into their new stadium in 2010, there is uncertainty." It is "all about the economy," and "no one can predict where it's headed." Even if each team "falls short of a sellout by a thousand tickets, or even less, the sales parameters have changed." If the unsold individual tickets are "put on sale a couple of days before a game, how exactly will this be explained to someone who has already purchased a similarly priced ticket and a PSL?" This is a "dilemma both teams may actually have to face" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 4/24).

ALL BUSINESS: In Minneapolis, Patrick Reusse wrote this has been an "offseason of financial reality" for Vikings Owner Zygi Wilf, his family and Vikings fans. Wilf has "suggested the Vikings operate in a vacuum -- that the football team has nothing to do with other holdings." Even if that is true, the Vikings' business "isn't too hot, either." Reusse: "You can embrace all such justifications for an offseason when the Vikings have spent a total of $11.55[M] on new talent." But this "looks like an offseason that has been all about business -- about a reaction to a nasty recession, a fall in season-ticket sales and another stadium shutout suffered at the Legislature" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 4/23).
