Kim Ng States Her Case To Be First Female GM In MLB On "E:60"

Ng Could Become First Female GM In MLB
Dodgers Assistant GM KIM NG has nearly 20 years of experience in MLB, and she is "poised to become the game’s first female general manager," according to ESPN's Lisa Salters, who profiled Ng for the net's "E:60." Ng is entering her eighth season in her current role with the Dodgers, and she is “often described as meticulous and prepared (and) has a reputation as an unyielding negotiator.” Ng interviewed with the Mariners for their vacant GM position during the offseason, and Yankees GM BRIAN CASHMAN said, “Without question, she is just as capable, if not more so, than I am. There’s nothing that can hold her back or should hold her back.” When asked whether Ng will become the first female GM, Dodgers manager JOE TORRE said, “I don’t know of anybody else that should be. But I think baseball has sometimes been in the Dark Ages as far as making change because it’s time.” Ng noted the difference between her or any other male GM is a “perception of whether I could do” the job, because “no woman has ever done it.” Ng: “Whether I have the toughness to do it I think that’s going to be first and foremost on people’s minds.” Yankees Assistant GM JEAN AFTERMAN is the only other female in such a position with an MLB team, and she said, "If you’re not loud, people may mistake that for being a shrinking violet, which Kim is definitely not.” Ng said MLB is ready for a female GM, adding, “You’re going to have people who say, ‘You know, I’ve dealt with Kim and she’s great.’ But you’re going to have people who don’t know me very well who say, ‘Are you kidding? No chance’” (“E:60,” ESPN, 4/21).
