Jets Confirm Plans To Relocate Training Camp To SUNY Cortland

Jets Will Make Five Minicamp Practices
This Offseason Open To The Public
The Jets yesterday formally announced plans to hold their Training Camp this season on the SUNY Cortland campus, beginning July 31. The team also announced that they will make open to the public five minicamp practices at their Atlantic Health Training Center in Florham Park, New Jersey, beginning June 6. In addition, the team's '09 Training Camp will feature select open-to-the-public practices in three locations: upstate New York, Long Island and New Jersey (Jets). In New York, Brian Delaney notes the one-year deal between the Jets and SUNY Cortland includes the "possibility for an extension." New York Gov. David Paterson, who was on hand for the announcement, said that the state will contribute $410,000 in "grants from a discretionary fund controlled by the governor," which will be used to "upgrade facilities and help defer the costs of hosting the team." The Jets estimated the cost of the move at $800,000. Meanwhile, Cornell Univ. football coach Jim Knowles said that Cornell was "thought initially to be the Jets' first or second choice," while Marist College and Utica College also reportedly were under consideration (ITHACA JOURNAL, 4/21). The Giants this season will train at SUNY Albany, while the Bills will hold their Training Camp at St. John Fisher College near Rochester (ITHACA JOURNAL, 4/21). A Syracuse POST-STANDARD editorial states when the Jets arrive in July, Central New York "should put out the welcome mat in a way that will make the team want to return" (Syracuse POST-STANDARD, 4/21).

LEAVING HOME: In Newark, Dave Hutchinson noted the Jets last season held Training Camp at the Atlantic Health Training Center, which the team opened in '07, but is relocating camp because new coach Rex Ryan "wants to take his team to an isolated environment" (NJ.com, 4/20). Ryan said moving facilities has "nothing to do with our facilities or getting out of Florham Park." Ryan: "I love it here. These facilities are better than anybody's in the league. It's about getting away. Getting away from the comfort of this place, of these surrounding areas where their homes are and all that, and putting them in a camp situation where all they got is each other, there's nothing else" (NEWSDAY, 4/21).
