Where's The Love? Blog Claims T'Wolves Copied Its Award Promo
Blog TimberwolvesPress.com is claiming that the T'Wolves "plagiarized a parody it did a couple of months ago when the Wolves' public relations staff sent media members a 'Mr. Love Miracle Glass-Cleaning' kit" to promote F Kevin Love for NBA Rookie of the Year, according to Jerry Zgoda of the Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE. T'Wolves PR Dir Mike Cristaldi said that he was "unaware of the site and parody" until TimberwolvesPress.com Founder Alec Schimke "called foul" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 4/12). Schimke wrote, "I am arguing that the visual I created in January is identical to what the Timberwolves created a week ago. I find it too strange and ironic that they would come up with the same visual that I had created months before" (TIMBERWOLVESPRESS.com, 4/13).

Bulls Send ROY Voters Package That
Includes Derrick Rose Colored Glasses |
SOMETIMES LOVE JUST AIN'T ENOUGH: The campaign around Love has garnered a large amount of publicity, but he is not the only Rookie of the Year candidate to have support from his team. The Grizzlies debuted a campaign in support of G O.J. Mayo during All-Star weekend in February with the launch of voteoj.com, as well as three billboards around the Phoenix area. The Grizzlies have continued to update the site with Mayo's stats throughout the season, and recently sent out a direct mail campaign to voters. Grizzlies Corporate PR Manager Matt Tumbleson said the team "wanted to come up with a larger than life campaign" to illustrate Mayo's candidacy. Meanwhile, Bulls G Derrick Rose, largely considered the front-runner to win the award, has seen the team launch droseroy.com. In addition to featuring a list of stats and accomplishments for the No. 1 overall pick from last year's draft, the Web site allows fans to link to it through Facebook and leave messages supporting Rose for the award. The team has also sent voters a publication focused on Rose that includes some stats and information about the rookie that can be discovered only by wearing a pair of "Derrick Rose-Colored Glasses" (Jessica Collins, THE DAILY).
PROMOTE THE VOTE: In San Antonio, Mike Monroe wrote he applauds the Thunder's support of Rookie of the Year candidate Russell Westbrook. Instead of mailing a "cheesy, themed gift" like the Heat did with an "MV3" T-shirt and DVD promoting G Dwyane Wade as MVP, the Thunder "e-mailed a PDF file" of Westbrook's season stats. Meanwhile, the Trail Blazers "sent media voters a sophisticated pen/recorder, called a Pulse Smartpen," to promote coach Nate McMillan for Coach of the Year. Monroe: "Call me contrary, but my vote is not for sale. ... I'm going to ship [the Pulse Smartpen] back to Portland and turn in an expense report for postage" (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 4/12).
