NFL Draft Prospect Andre Smith Fires Alvin Keels As Agent

Smith Fires Agent Less Than
Two Weeks Before NFL Draft
Former Alabama OT and expected first-round NFL Draft pick ANDRE SMITH has sent a letter terminating his relationship with agent ALVIN KEELS to the NFLPA, a union source confirmed, but Keels said he has not been told he has been fired. Smith’s termination of Keels, less than two weeks before the NFL Draft, was first reported yesterday by the Birmingham News. Keels after being reached yesterday said, “I have not been fired. " In a text message late Monday night, Keels added he was scheduled to meet with Smith today. Under NFLPA rules, if the firing is official, Smith cannot sign with another agent until five days after the termination letter was sent. Smith was originally viewed as one of the top picks in the Draft, but his stock has dropped after he was held out of the Sugar Bowl for alleged contact with an agent and after he left the NFL Combine early. In early February, Smith was ranked No. 2 by Web site NFLDraftBlitz.com, but yesterday he was ranked No. 6 and is not among the nine players who have accepted invitations to the NFL Draft. The NFL Monday said the nine players expected to attend the Draft are Texas Tech WR MICHAEL CRABTREE, Wake Forest LB AARON CURRY, USC LB BRIAN CUSHING, Kansas State QB JOSH FREEMAN, Virginia OT EUGENE MONROE, Ole Miss OT MICHAEL OHER, Texas DE BRIAN ORAKPO, Baylor OT JASON SMITH and Georgia QB MATTHEW STAFFORD (Liz Mullen, SportsBusiness Journal). In Birmingham, Ian Rapoport cited a source as saying that Smith is expected to hire Greengross Athletic Management Enterprises President IAN GREENGROSS (AL.com, 4/13). ESPN's Trey Wingo noted Greengross was "one of five agents scheduled to originally meet with Smith before he hired Keels” ("SportsCenter Special," ESPN, 4/13).
