Marketplace Roundup

ST. LOUIS BUSINESS JOURNAL's Kelsey Volkmann reported the Budweiser sign on a rooftop outside Wrigley Field "was replaced with an advertisement for Horseshoe Casino" for the Cubs' home-opener yesterday against the Pirates. A-B InBev VP/Marketing Keith Levy said that the brewer "decided to stop paying for the signage because A-B continued to have a strong presence in the stadium without it and because the building owner's asking price 'far exceeded' what A-B was willing to pay for it." Levy said that the A-B InBev "would reinvest the money in advertising elsewhere in Chicago" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 4/13).

SHOE MONEY TONIGHT: Converse is re-issuing a limited amount of the Wade 1, the first signature shoe for Heat G Dwyane Wade. Fewer than 2,400 pairs of the shoe have been released (SUN-SENTINEL.com, 4/13)....adidas has designed a limited-edition shoe to celebrate its 20-year partnership with the Boston Athletic Association, which organizes the Boston Marathon. Only 800 pairs of the Supernova Sequence 2, which retail for $100, are available at shopadidas.com and at local retailers (BOSTON.com, 4/13).

JAY WALKING: In Chicago, Lewis Lazare reported Bears management recently was "thinking of launching an ad campaign to help generate even more excitement" over the team's recent acquisition of QB Jay Cutler. Two by Four, Chicago -- the team's agency of record -- "did develop at least one print execution intended to tout Cutler," but the campaign was nixed "after the Bears examined ad budgets in greater detail" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 4/13).

MILK MEN: Convenience store chain Cumberland Farms yesterday announced that it has agreed to a deal to become the official convenience store of the Red Sox. The deal includes use of the Red Sox logo on in-store products and a new electronic Cumberland Farms sign "in the right field roof area" at Fenway Park (BIZJOURNALS.com, 4/13).
