CBS Moves Iron Bowl Game, Despite Mixed
Reactions From Alabama, Auburn |
CBS is moving the next two Auburn-Alabama football games "up one day for national television broadcasts on the Friday after Thanksgiving," according to Gentry Estes of the Mobile PRESS-REGISTER. Alabama AD Mal Moore and Auburn AD Jay Jacobs "each released statements explaining that the move was requested by CBS per the network's television deal with the SEC." The contractual obligation "leaves the schools little say in the matter." Moore: "We're sympathetic to the needs of our fan base, so we understand this may cause some issues with travel or other considerations." Jacobs: "It will also be the marquee rivalry game that day and provide tremendous exposure on CBS for our program and our state." But Alabama coach Nick Saban said, "I really wasn't for moving the game, to be honest with you, to Friday. I like to play it on Saturday" (Mobile PRESS-REGISTER, 4/12). In Birmingham, Doug Segrest wrote the "only other game confirmed for a national broadcast during the same window is the Central Florida-UAB game at Legion Field," which CBS College Sports will carry at 1:00pm ET. However, UAB officials are "already checking on moving the game to Nov. 28 to avoid a scheduling conflict" (BIRMINGHAM NEWS, 4/11). In Baton Rouge, Joseph Schiefelbein noted CBS had aired Arkansas-LSU on the Friday after Thanksgiving the past 13 seasons. CBS Sports Senior VP/Communications LeslieAnne Wade and SEC Associate Commissioner for Media Relations Charles Bloom "confirmed the Arkansas-LSU game would stay, as scheduled, on a Saturday" (Baton Rouge ADVOCATE, 4/11).
