BMO Field Forced To Ban Alcohol Sales For May Soccer Match

Exhibition Game At BMO Field On May 30
Will Be An Alcohol-Free Event
BMO Field will be "subjected to a one-game ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages next month," according to Paul Attfield of the GLOBE & MAIL. As a result of "what is known as a pass-off, where patrons buy beer and hand it over to minors, which occurred at a Toronto FC" game at BMO Field in May '08, an "exhibition game between two Portuguese soccer teams on May 30 will now be an alcohol-free event." Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), the owner of Toronto FC and managers of the city-owned BMO Field, "has already taken steps to make sure this kind of offence does not occur again." MLSE Exec VP/Venues & Entertainment Bob Hunter: "We previously contracted out our alcohol-management security. We now bring existing staff over from the Air Canada Centre." The news comes after the Blue Jays last week announced Rogers Centre will have a two-event ban on alcohol sales this season (GLOBE & MAIL, 4/11).

DISORDERLY CONDUCT: The GLOBE & MAIL's Michael Grange wrote the "underlying reason why a small segment of Toronto sports fans present themselves as vulgar and occasionally violent is open to speculation," but alcohol is a "common theme." Blue Jays VP/Stadium Operations & Security Mario Coutinho said that his staff "eject about 50 fans a game over the course of the season, for reasons ranging from drunkenness to ticket violations." Hunter said there were "no more than five ejections" from the Sounders-Toronto FC game on April 4 and added that there were "only six or seven" ejections at the April 4 Canadiens-Maple Leafs game at Air Canada Centre  (GLOBE & MAIL, 4/11).
