Phillies Receive Lavish Championship Rings In Pregame Ceremony

Phillies Championship Rings Feature
103 Diamonds, Total Of 3.84 Karats
The Phillies yesterday before their game against the Braves were presented championship rings for their '08 World Series win, and the franchise "took the unusual step of keeping the rings a secret," as "none of the players got a peek before the ceremony," according to Phil Sheridan of the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER. The rings were designed by a "committee of seven appointed" by Phillies President & CEO David Montgomery, and they were produced by Massachusetts-based Masters of Design. The rings feature 103 diamonds, for a "total of 3.84 karats representing 92 regular-season and 11 postseason wins," a suggestion made by clubhouse manager Frank Coppenbarger. One side of the 14-karat white gold ring features each player's name and number, along with a Liberty Bell, while the other side includes a rendering of Citizens Bank Park "with the World Series trophy emerging from it." The top features the team's "P" logo "in diamonds on a ruby field, ringed by the words 'World Champions.'" Phillies P Scott Eyre: "They said they would be nice, but this is ridiculous." Sheridan notes the rings arrived at the ballpark "in a van escorted by four police officers on motorcycles," and they were "placed on a red-clothed table near home plate." Montgomery handed them out, beginning with retired GM Pat Gillick. In addition to 37 rings for players, coaches and staff, "another 275 or so will be awarded to Phillies employees," and they will have a "choice between the player rings, which are quite large, and a smaller version that can be worn by ordinary-size folks" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 4/9). In Philadelphia, Paul Hagen notes the ceremony began with two police motorcycles entering the field from the rightfield corner, and they were "followed by a white van and two more motorcycles." The "closed blinds on the vehicle's windows were a nice touch." The van pulled up to the Phillies dugout where a "red carpet had been rolled out to a table at home plate," and a "procession of Phillies ball girls solemnly carried the boxes toward the plate and set them on the table" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 4/9).

VICTORY LAP: In Philadelphia, David Murphy reports the Phillies will visit the White House on Tuesday, where President Obama, Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, will be in attendance (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 4/9).
