MLB Facility Notes: Citi Field Food Earns Nod Over Yankee Stadium

Food Net's Sandra Lee Says Citi Field's
Burgers Better Than In-N-Out Burger
In N.Y., Angela Montefinise noted Food Network's Sandra Lee last Friday was at Citi Field and the new Yankee Stadium during exhibition games "sampling everything from french fries to fried pickles in an unofficial tasting." The Mets "homered with their game-day grub, while the Yankees struck out." Lee: "I really hate to say it, but it's no contest. I think Yankee Stadium is a warmer venue. But I am really, really disappointed in the food." The "most obvious difference was between the hamburgers -- Lee tried a $5.75 cheeseburger at Danny Meyer's Shake Shack at Citi Field and a $9 Johnny Rockets burger at Yankee Stadium." Lee said of the cheeseburger from Citi Field, "That is better than an In-N-Out burger, and that's tough to do." Lee was also "particularly impressed with Citi Field's Mexican offerings." She "preferred the variety of choices at Citi Field, as well." The one item where the Yankees "scored higher was french fries" (N.Y. POST, 4/5)

HOME IMPROVEMENTS: In Pittsburgh, Karen Price notes fans at PNC Park this season "will notice the completely revamped field, including new grass, cutout, infield dirt, warning track and pitching mound." The new grass, a Tuckahoe Bluegrass from a sod farm in New Jersey, was "installed last fall." The Pirates "also replaced the underground piping system that delivers warm air to the grass and helps wick moisture away." The infield dirt is "new Dura Edge All-Star Infield Mix." One of the "other big changes is that the Pirates brought a portion of Forbes Field wall out of storage, where it sat since the demise of Three Rivers Stadium, and reassembled it on the Riverwalk" (Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 4/7).

TAX TIME: In Milwaukee, Don Walker cited data from the Miller Park stadium district as indicating that $1.8M in "sales-tax money was distributed in March, more than 20% lower than last year's March distribution." The district's collection year-to-date is "now 5.25% behind last year's three-month pace," and the March distribution also "fell short of the district's own forecast by more than $416,000." Walker noted residents in Milwaukee, Racine, Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington Counties "pay a 0.1% sales tax to finance the construction and debt of Miller Park" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 4/4).

Reds New Daktronics Videoboard Cost $10M
TECH UPGRADE: MLB.com's Mark Sheldon noted the Reds debuted new technology at yesterday's season opener against the Mets, including a "new and vivid HD scoreboard system." All 64 luxury suites at Great American Ball Park also now "feature a 46-inch Sony BRAVIA LCD television connected to a computer running Sony's StadiumView application," which allows fans to "select multiple HD feeds from many different camera angles." The 138-by-39-foot scoreboard and the video system were designed by Daktronics and had a total cost of $10M, which was "paid for by the Reds" (MLB.com, 4/5).

GRASS IS GREENER: In N.Y., George Vecsey writes Camden Yards is "still the reigning star of the modern era of ballparks." With the "brick warehouse and the open-air food court out behind right field, and the three tiers of handsome green stands, and a glimpse of downtown out behind center field," Camden Yards is "way ahead" of the new Yankees Stadium and Citi Field (N.Y. TIMES, 4/7).

ROCK ON: In Boston, Jed Gottlieb notes rock band Phish yesterday confirmed that it "will open its first summer tour in five years with a concert" at Fenway Park on May 31. Dave Matthews Band will play at Fenway Park on May 29 and 30 (BOSTON HERALD, 4/7).
