AL Franchise Notes: Company, Sox Deal With Monster Trademarks

Red Sox Agree To Withdraw, Modify Some
Green Monster-Related Products
The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Steve Stecklow noted Monster Cable Products Inc. in the past has "opposed the Boston Red Sox trademark applications for seats and hot dogs named for the Green Monster" at Fenway Park. Monster Cable GM David Tognotti said that the team "agreed to withdraw or modify some of its trademark registrations for Green Monster-related products after Monster Cable argued there was 'confusion in the marketplace.'" Monster Cable at the time owned the naming rights to Candlestick Park in S.F. An MLB spokesperson said that the Red Sox "had agreed with Monster Cable over a 'procedural matter' but declined to elaborate" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 4/4).

SURVEY SAYS: In Ft. Worth, Drew Davison notes the Rangers "pumped a lot of money into improvements at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington during the off-season," and most fans "enjoyed the new additions." The FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM during yesterday's home opener against the Indians surveyed 20 fans on the changes at the ballpark, some of which were "hits," while others were "met with indifference" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 4/7).

TIGER CUBS: ESPN's Peter Gammons said of Tigers Owner Mike Ilitch giving GM, Chrysler and Ford free advertisement in Comerica Park, "Mike Ilitch wants that city to succeed. He loves Detroit. He's lost a lot of money in the last couple of years, but he has gotten three million people in the ballpark each year. ... He's paying for it all because he said, 'You know what, it's all for one and one for all when it comes to this city and we're going to save it'" ("Baseball Tonight," ESPN2, 4/6).
