AVP Commish Wants To Build Permanent Facility At Long Beach

Armato Wants To Build Permanent
Volleyball City In Long Beach
AVP Commissioner Leonard Armato said he would "love to form a public-private relationship with Long Beach and build a permanent facility on the beach that could be the first of its kind in the country," according to Doug Krikorian of the Long Beach PRESS-TELEGRAM. Armato: "Long Beach would be the perfect place on the West Coast for such a place. The facility could be used not only for volleyball events, but also for concerts and various other revenue-generating activities." Krikorian notes the AVP last week announced that Coney Island "would replace Long Beach this summer on its tour," and Armato said, "Believe me, I didn't want to leave Long Beach." Armato: "I had no other choice. I lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in Long Beach during the couple of times we were there. What do you think it cost to put on an event? Just to erect the stadium cost $350,000. And when you add up all the other costs like our contract to put the event live on NBC, and it comes to around [$1.5M]. That's a lot of money." Meanwhile, Armato "insists that his business is not on the threshold of extinction." Armato: "We are not -- and I repeat -- we are not in danger of folding. Without a doubt, we're under pressure to be profitable. But we're not going anywhere." Krikorian notes the AVP "will be without its top gate attraction" this season, as partners Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh are not playing -- May-Treanor is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon and Walsh is pregnant (Long Beach PRESS-TELEGRAM, 4/7).
