NL Franchise Notes: Phillies Maintaining Sponsorship Deals

Phillies Officials Say Club Has Done Well
Renewing Existing Sponsorship Deals
Phillies officials indicated that while they "haven't significantly expanded their roster of corporate partners, they have done well renewing existing sponsorship deals." Phillies Senior VP/Marketing & Advertising Sales David Buck said that the team on the marketing front has "added a handful of new partners -- most noticeably Tasty Baking Co., which is back with the team after a three-year absence." Buck added that the Phillies were "able to hold onto sponsors in some increasingly difficult sponsorship categories such as automobile manufacturers," as Chevrolet remains as a Phillies sponsor (PHILADELPHIA BUSINESS JOURNAL, 4/3 issue). Meanwhile, Phillies Dir of Merchandising Scott Brandreth said that the team is "prepping mementos out of scraps from Citizens Bank Park." In Philadelphia, Michael Klein reported the "clubhouse carpeting, replaced over the winter, is being chopped into 2-by-3-foot squares, which will be adorned with players' numbers and World Series patches and fashioned into doormats." Also, old padding from the dugout railings and centerfield wall "will be cut into sections and sold, as will the netting along the foul poles" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 4/5).

FINDING MIDDLE GROUND: In Pittsburgh, Rob Biertempfel reports the Pirates' Opening Day payroll is $48.693M, "essentially the same figure as a year ago" and the third-lowest total in MLB. Pirates President Frank Coonelly: "I can see a day when our payroll is far closer to the median (in the majors) than it is today. There is no reason we would have to stay at the bottom of the payroll list, as long as we're successful in turning this franchise around. But, my objective is not to have a payroll that's closer to the median. My objective is to have a winning ballclub" (Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 4/7). Meanwhile, Biertempfel wrote Pirates GM Neal Huntington "already has dramatically transformed the franchise ... in little more than one year." Pirates Owner Bob Nutting: "Neal is going to be measured on how the team performs. But right now, I'm very impressed with the steps we're making" (Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 4/5).

Padres' Season-Ticket Sales Down
About 25% From Last Year
TOUGH PACE TO MAINTAIN: In a front-page piece, the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE's John Wilkens notes the Padres yesterday drew a sellout crowd of 45,496 fans to Petco Park for their home opener against the Dodgers, the "largest crowd ever" at the ballpark. But season-ticket sales are "down about 25[%] from what they were heading into 2008, a season that saw the Padres lose 99 games and finish last" in the NL West. The Padres drew 2.4 million fans last season, and the team this season "might fall below 2 million for the first time since 1994, a strike-shortened season." The team's schedule is "laden with crowd-drawing extras: fireworks on Fridays, freebies such as T-shirts on Saturdays and kids' days on Sundays." The Padres also have "dropped the average ticket price 27[%] and slashed the cost of some food items." Wilkens notes the team's new "5 for 5" menu option, which includes a hot dog, soda, popcorn, peanuts and cookie for $5, was a "big hit" yesterday (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 4/7).

SLOWLY BUT SURELY: The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Matthew Futterman reported prospective Cubs Owner Tom Ricketts is "having the corporate equivalent of an extended spring training," as the financing for his purchase of the team "hasn't been resolved -- and isn't expected to until mid-spring" due to the credit crisis (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 4/6).
