Marlins Tease New Ballpark With Signage At Dolphin Stadium

Marlins Promoting New Ballpark
With Signs At Dolphin Stadium
The Marlins yesterday during their home opener against the Nationals at Dolphin Stadium "launched a new scoreboard feature: fun facts about the ballpark," which will unveil one new fact about the team's new ballpark at each of the 243 regular-season home games leading up to its opening in '12, according to Sarah Talalay of the South Florida SUN-SENTINEL. The new ballpark is "already part of the fabric at Dolphin Stadium," as the team "showed a video on the scoreboard with renderings by architecture firm Populous." The left field wall at the stadium is now "back in the Marlins' hands," after being "covered by a giant Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida advertisement" since July '03. The tribe "didn't renew and now the team is using the wall to advertise its Super Saturday concerts," as well as the new ballpark. Marlins President David Samson indicated that his "favorite part is the ballpark rendering and the words 'Priority Seating for the New Marlins Ballpark @ Marlins.com.'" Samson said that he "could see giving over advertising space ... if the team received 'an offer we can't refuse,'" but he added that the "new ballpark seating reference is more valuable." Samson: "The benefits we can derive, by having people buy tickets, priority in the new ballpark, is far greater than what we can get for an outfield wall." Meanwhile, Samson noted that the Marlins already have "created some 60 committees to consider all aspects of the new venue from naming rights to ticket prices to concession equipment storage areas to marketing." Marlins Owner Jeffrey Loria said that he "wants to send a message to fans that with ballpark financing approved and ground breaking planned for this summer, the team will be in South Florida for generations" (SUN-SENTINEL.com, 4/6). In Ft. Lauderdale, Dave Hyde notes the only talk of the new ballpark yesterday at the Nationals-Marlins game was from the outfield sign advertising priority seating, which Samson "had constructed three years ago and finally put up" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 4/7). In West Palm Beach, Carlos Frias notes the left-centerfield wall was "adorned with four dates: 1993, the club's inaugural season; 1997 and 2003, the years of the Marlins' World Series championships; and 2012, when the new chapter will begin" (PALM BEACH POST, 4/7).
