Beeston Says List Of Candidates
Has Been Narrowed To About Five |
Blue Jays interim CEO Paul Beeston Thursday "discussed the current progress of his six-month-old task of finding his replacement," and he "left a clear feel of not really wanting to go," according to Richard Griffin of the TORONTO STAR. Beeston: "In a perfect world, I could stay until the end of the year and just have some fun and do these things, but I don't feel that's right for the organization. I'm satisfied with the way it's going." Beeston said of finding his replacement, "It has to be the right person in Rogers' mind and in my mind to go forward. Until that time, we'll just stay this way." Beeston indicated that his list of candidates has been "narrowed to about five." Griffin notes some of the "prominent names that have been mentioned include" Nationals President Stan Kasten, former Padres CEO Sandy Alderson, Related Hudson Yards President Jay Cross and Olympico President Keith Pelley. Beeston said, "You're talking a unique operation where ownership doesn't interfere, so whoever is the CEO, you're really saying, 'We're giving you your own company; your own baseball team. All you've got to do is perform'" (TORONTO STAR, 4/3).
PADRES: In San Diego, Tim Sullivan writes the Padres are "structurally sounder now than they were before Alderson's administration -- more consistent, more systematic -- and their minor-league pipeline is more promising." Another "point of pride for Alderson is that what once was a conspicuous absence is now a formidable presence in the Dominican Republic." But as their "major league product bottomed out last season, the Padres' long-range infrastructure initiatives lacked the immediacy and resonance of a 99-loss season." Alderson was "poorly positioned to boast about the quality of his foundation work as the roof was collapsing." Though "several dubious personnel decisions were made on his watch, Alderson was hard-pressed to overcome drafting and development mistakes that preceded him." Alderson also could not "spend funds" former Padres Majority Owner John Moores "did not provide." Alderson was "at least as much a victim of circumstance as the arrogant autocrat of popular perception." The Padres' "core problem is not dysfunction, but dollars" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 4/3).
