Delta Ends Falcons Sponsorship, To Focus On Baseball Deals

Delta Will Remain Official Airline Of The Braves
Despite Pulling Out Of Sponsorship With Falcons
Delta Air Lines has "pulled out of its sponsorship of the Falcons, saying it is aligning more with baseball," according to Leon Stafford of the ATLANTA CONSTITUTION. Delta Dir of US External Communications Kent Landers said the company's customer research "tells us that baseball is highly aligned to our customers interest." Landers: "Delta will remain the official airline of the Atlanta Braves and is becoming the official airline of New York baseball with title sponsorships of both the Mets and Yankees." Meanwhile, Falcons VP/Marketing Jim Smith, who is "seeking sponsorship renewals from Macy's, St. Joseph's Hospital, Allstate, Motorola and SunTrust," said that overall advertising revenue is "down and that the Falcons are cutting prices in areas where they have big inventory." Smith: "Flat is the new up in 2009." Stafford notes Falcons ad revenue for '09 is "expected to be around $6.1[M], about the same as last year," while two new scoreboards being installed at the Georgia Dome had a "total pricetag of $8.6[M]" (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 4/1).

BRAVES DEAL IN QUESTION? Smith also said Delta has "made a strategic decision to take all sports marketing out of the city of Atlanta." But the ATLANTA BUSINESS CHRONICLE's Trubey & Manasso cited sources as saying that Delta's deal with the Braves is "not up for renewal." Braves Exec VP/Sales & Marketing Derek Schiller added that the Braves' relationship with Delta has "never been stronger." Schiller: "We have a successful partnership and I believe that I can speak for both ... entities and say that it is successful and something that we hope to be able to continue for many years to come." Schiller "would not say when the Braves' deal with Delta expires, but did say it covers the 2009 season." He noted that the club "expected to be able to renew it when it does expire." Trubey & Manasso noted Baseball HOFer Hank Aaron and Braves RF Jeff Francoeur have been "part of a national marketing campaign with Delta" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 3/31).
