Promise To Pursue Second Sprint Cup Race At
Kansas Speedway Part Of Resubmitted Bid |
Kansas Speedway President Jeff Boerger yesterday "hand-delivered to Kansas Lottery offices a resubmitted bid for a $700[M] entertainment project featuring a Hard Rock Casino overlooking Turn 2 at Kansas Speedway," according to Randy Covitz of the K.C. STAR. Kansas Entertainment, a partnership between Kansas Speedway and Baltimore-based Cordish Co., in December "withdrew the application because of the downturn in the economy." As part of the resubmitted bid, the proposed $390M casino, which "will include 100,000 square feet of gambling as well as a bar and dining and entertainment options, will be built first." Boerger: "We're not scaling back. We're phasing it in. We'll do the casino first, and the hotel, meeting space, entertainment will come after all the financial markets turn around and we can raise finances to do this. We'll do it." Covitz notes "another difference in the bid is the promise to pursue a second NASCAR Sprint Cup race and commitment to build a road course inside the infield of the track for Grand-Am Road Racing events." If "all goes well, Boerger anticipates hearing a decision by the end of September or early October." Boerger said the casino could be "up and running by the fourth quarter of 2010." While it is "possible Kansas' second NASCAR Sprint Cup event could be added for 2010, the more likely target would be 2011 after the casino opens" (K.C. STAR, 3/31).
