VANOC In Advanced Talks For Carbon Offset Management Sponsor

VANOC yesterday announced that it is in advanced sponsorship talks with carbon offset management companies to create a carbon offset portfolio for the '10 Olympics. The organization has set a target of neutralizing 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions from the Games. The announcement coincided with the start of the '09 World Conference on Sport and the Environment in Vancouver (VANOC). The CP's Stephanie Levitz reported VANOC officials "hope to sign a sponsorship deal with a company that would, among other things, invest in green technologies and programs to counterbalance the amount of carbon the Games will create." VANOC VP/Sustainability Linda Coady: "We're going to put 300,000 tonnes out there into the atmosphere, and we're going to invest in projects that reduce carbon by an equivalent amount." But without an official sponsor and with less than 10 months remaining until the '10 Games, there "remains no actual plan to neutralize the impact of the Games." VANOC CEO John Furlong: "We're very confident we're going to have partners in this, but we're not going to say we have them until we have them." Levitz noted the "estimated cost of offsetting the emissions generated by the 2010 Games" is C$4.5M, with emissions currently trading at about C$15 per ton (CP, 3/30). Coady said that she "believes Vancouver 2010 has cut its carbon footprint by about 20[%] by designing green buildings and through sustainability policies" (Vancouver PROVINCE, 3/31).

NOT SO FAST: In Vancouver, Jeff Lee reports plans to "hold Olympic medal ceremonies at the celebration plaza in Whistler are alive again." After Furlong in January said that the presentation ceremonies "would likely be cancelled," VANOC and the IOC are "trying to reach a deal to keep them, possibly by Wednesday at the conclusion of the IOC's Vancouver Coordination Commission meeting." The decision is "whether to present the medals in the plaza, or give athletes their medals at their places of competition" (VANCOUVER SUN, 3/31).
