Isles Owner Charles Wang May Consider Moving Team To Queens

Charles Wang Says Main Focus Right Now Is
To Get New Facility Built For Team
Islanders Owner Charles Wang "isn't ruling out Queens in his power play to win a swanky new rink" for the team, according to Nicholas Hirshon of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. Wang said that he "would consider moving the hockey club to Queens, vowing to mull all choices if his bid to revamp Nassau Coliseum isn't approved by October." Wang: "Right now, the whole focus and the whole plan is on one thing: getting this thing built. Obviously, if it doesn't get done within the time frame, then we look at all options." Queens leaders "hope to lure the Islanders as part of redevelopment plans for Willets Point," but Wang said the 62-acre tract near Citi Field "isn't even in the priority list." A N.Y. city Economic Development Corp. spokesperson said that a request for proposal on Willets Point "will go out this year, allowing developers a window of about two months to respond" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 3/31).

NAME CHANGE: On Long Island, Eden Laikin reports developers of the proposed new coliseum and Wang's Lighthouse Project will give the United Veterans Organization of Nassau (UVON) $1M and "some other benefits in return for giving up" the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum name for the new arena. The developer and UVON sources indicated that under the agreement, the Lighthouse Group "would give the United Veterans $50,000 a year for 20 years for the upkeep of Veterans Plaza in Eisenhower Park." The developers also "will call the roadway leading to the new coliseum Veterans Memorial Way and provide vets' groups with office space in one of the Lighthouse buildings." Nassau County officials "contend that as the coliseum name is in the county charter, a name change would require a legislative vote." An agreement between Lighthouse officials and veterans "could pave the way for that approval." If the plan for a new coliseum is approved, Wang and RXR Realty Chair & CEO Scott Rechler "could sell the naming rights, but have not said whether they would do so" (NEWSDAY, 3/31).
